Duties & Responsibilities:

The newly established Harris Laboratory is seeking a highly motivated and organized Lab Technician to help launch and advance a new interdisciplinary research program. Our lab integrates population science with experimental approaches to investigate how chronic social and environmental stressors impact the breast tissue microenvironment, contributing to disparities in breast cancer risk and outcomes. This role involves performing complex wet lab experiments (in vitro and in vivo), assisting in the establishment of lab protocols, training students, providing administrative and organizational support, and overseeing laboratory maintenance, cleanliness, and safety/regulatory compliance.

This is a one-year initial appointment with the option to renew based on external funding and mutual fit.

Core Responsibilities:

  1. Experimental Research & Data Analysis
    • Establish 2D/3D cell culture and organoid models
    • Perform in vivo mouse studies, including handling, monitoring, weighing, tumor implantation and tracking, drug administration, necropsies, and tissue processing
    • Perform molecular assays (PCR, IHC, Flow Cytometry, ELISA, etc.)
    • Analyze experimental data and assist in preparing figures for manuscripts and grant applications
  2. Lab Operations & Protocol Development
    • Coordinate initial equipment setup, calibration, and supply procurement
    • Establish and optimize standard operating procedures (SOPs) and laboratory protocols for a new lab
    • Manage sample inventory and maintain organized records of patient-derived samples and data
  3. Administrative Support & Compliance
    • Coordinate laboratory ordering and supply management
    • Assist in the maintenance and handling of study protocols (IRB/IACUC)
  4. Mentorship & Lab Maintenance
    • Train and supervise students at various levels on lab techniques and safety protocols
    • Maintain laboratory equipment and ensure a clean, safe working environment

Qualifications:

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in a biomedical science discipline (e.g., Biology, Biochemistry, Molecular Biology)
  • Demonstrated experience in wet lab techniques (e.g., pipetting, tissue processing, molecular assays)
  • Experience with animal handling and mouse models (handling, administration, necropsy, etc)
  • Exceptional organizational skills, attention to detail, and self-motivation
  • Reliable, timely communicator, and able to work both independently and as part of a team
  • Demonstrated ability to work in and foster an environment of respect, professionalism and civility with a population of faculty, staff, and students from all backgrounds and experiences, or a commitment to do so as a staff member at VCU

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience with breast tumor models (PDX and/or syngeneic models)
  • Proficiency in data analysis and bioinformatics
  • Coding skills in R and experience analyzing sequencing data
  • Experience establishing cell lines and patient-derived organoids
  • Familiarity with VCU-specific compliance systems (SciShield/BioRAFT, RAMS)

Salary Range: $40,000-$45,000
