Advertising Summary: The Office of Student Athlete Support Services employs approximately 40-50 tutors in
nearly every major subject area each semester. VCU Rams Tutors promote academic
success by helping student-athletes who are experiencing academic difficulty or need
additional support to develop academic skills and course-specific knowledge.

Department: Athletics Office

Department Summary: VCU Athletics’ mission is to win conference and national championships, provide a first-class student-athlete experience, serve as a source of pride for the University and community and cultivate graduates who excel as leaders.

Duties & Responsibilities:

Tutors are expected to be knowledgeable in chosen content areas and be capable of teaching study skills and learning strategies. Tutors will also be responsible for special projects and other duties as assigned by the Tutor Coordinator. All tutors must complete a performance evaluation with the tutor coordinator each semester.
 
General Responsibilities:
1. Conduct weekly sessions with students to promote independent learning.
2. Identify and address study skill needs for students in the context of the tutorial session.
3. Communicate effectively with students.
4. Create and submit accurate records of sessions with student-athletes by the specified deadline.
5. Maintain a high level of knowledge in academic areas selected to tutor.
6. Know and comply with the policies of VCU SASS that govern the tutoring of student athletes, especially NCAA regulations.
7. Comply with the University’s FERPA, Honor Code, and Title IX guidelines.
8. Work with SASS staff to ensure success of the student-athlete.
9. Attend tutor training and meetings as required, completing at least 10 hours of training a semester.
10. Additional duties assigned by Tutor Coordinator.

Qualifications:

Minimum Qualifications

- Must have completed at least 40 credits.
- Must have a minimum 3.2 cumulative undergraduate and/or graduate GPA.
- Be available to work a minimum of 12 hours a week from the first day of classes to the end of final exams. You determine your own schedule.
- Have excellent communication skills and a patient, encouraging attitude

 

 

Salary Range: $13/hour
