Department: Neurosurgery

Mission or Goal of Unit: As clinicians, educators, and investigators in the evolving field of Neurosurgery, our mission is to improve the health of all people by excelling in patient care, education, and research.

Chief Purpose of This Position: The Department of Neurosurgery is seeking candidates for a full-time faculty position as a Teaching and Research Faculty member within the department of Neurosurgery. The faculty member will conduct research, engage in medical student and neurosurgery resident and fellow education, and participate in clinical and/or translational research.

Position Responsibilities: 

Teaching
The faculty member will be expected to teach medical students, neurosurgery residents, along with those from other Departments, and fellows.

Research
The department is engaged in clinical and translational research projects. The faculty member will be expected to participate in, and when appropriate lead, clinical and/or translational research projects and clinical trials. The prospective candidate should be an accomplished neurobiologist interested in neurotrauma, pediatric neurobiology, and pediatric brain injury. The successful candidate will work closely with other researchers within the departments of Neurology, Pathology and Neurobiology and contribute to the research mission of the department of Neurosurgery by obtaining extramural funding, publishing peer-reviewed manuscripts, and conducting collaborative research.

Service
The faculty member will serve on departmental, School of Medicine, and/or University committees as necessary, as well as in a professional capacity in their field, e.g. reviewer, conference organizer, etc.

Minimum Qualifications:

• PhD degree (or equivalent)
• Minimum of two years of postdoctoral training experience
• Demonstrated ability to work in and foster an environment of respect, professionalism, and civility with a population of faculty, staff, and students from all backgrounds and experiences, or a commitment to do so as a faculty member at VCU
• For tenure eligibility at the Assistant Professor rank, an established research agenda and a clear potential for external funding, as well as potential for scholarship or creative expression to complement and expand existing expertise in the department
• For tenure eligibility at the Associate Professor or Professor ranks, a well-developed scholarly/research portfolio with evidence of multi-disciplinary applications and external funding appropriate to complement and expand existing expertise in the department

Preferred Qualifications:

• Teaching experience in a university setting
• Published works on the field
• Strong analytical, observational, and problem-solving skills
• A good record of attending conferences and academic events
• Excellent research, writing including grants, and interpersonal skills
• A passion for teaching and engaging with students

Salary Range: $90,000 - $110,000/annually
