About the Office of Experiential Education:
The objective of the Office of Experiential Education is to ensure a quality program for each School of Pharmacy student’s fulfillment of all experiential education curricular requirements throughout the four-year program.

Key Responsibilities:

Program Administration: The Director of Experiential Education provides overall administrative leadership and strategic oversight for the School’s experiential education programs, ensuring alignment with ACPE standards, School educational outcomes, and PharmD program requirements. This includes implementing current program objectives, policies, procedures, and operations as well as long-range planning and budgeting. The Director oversees experiential education course coordination including student scheduling and assignments, communication of expectations to students, and managing affiliation agreements with sites. This role represents experiential education within School committees and institutional activities including serving on the Executive Committee, PharmD Curriculum Committee, Academic Performance Committee, Outcomes & Assessment Committee, and the Student Executive Council.

Quality Assurance: The Director of Experiential Education oversees the quality assurance processes for experiential education to ensure compliance with established policies, procedures, accreditation standards, affiliation agreements, and expectations for practice sites and preceptors. This includes conducting routine site visits; evaluating preceptor, student, and experiential site experiences; monitoring program outcomes and feedback; and identifying opportunities to improve and streamline processes while maintaining or enhancing program quality. The role also engages a representative preceptor advisory group to provide ongoing input regarding practice environments, program support, and emerging needs.

Preceptor Engagement: The Director of Experiential Education maintains strong, collaborative relationships with experiential sites and preceptors across Virginia and the District of Columbia to support high-quality and sustainable experiential education opportunities. Responsibilities include identifying and recruiting new sites and preceptors; overseeing the onboarding, training, and development of preceptors and maintaining regular communication regarding program goals, objectives, expectations, and changes affecting experiential education. The Director provides individualized consultation to preceptors regarding challenging student situations, facilitates resolution of concerns, conducts site visits, provides feedback and recognition, and identifies opportunities to strengthen preceptor knowledge, skills, and engagement.

Staff Supervision: The Director of Experiential Education oversees the Office of Experiential Education through the direct and indirect supervision of two support staff. Routine tasks and duties are delegated in accord with University policy and guidelines.

Teaching Responsibilities: The position serves as a lecturer within the Continuous Professional Development course series offered in each of the Pharm.D. didactic years and as a course coordinator of the Continuous Professional Development course during the fourth year of the Pharm.D. program. In addition, the Director of Experiential Education provides administrative support for all introductory and advanced pharmacy practice courses. 

Minimum Qualifications:

• M.S., M.Ed. or other Master’s degree in a related field
• Excellent organizational, interpersonal, problem solving, and time management skills
• Ability to handle multiple priorities and provide effective problem solving
• Excellent verbal and written communication skills
• Ability to work collaboratively in a team environment
• Ability to use good judgment and maintain confidentiality including knowledge of guidelines for handling sensitive information, familiarity with FERPA and other Federal requirements related to managing student information
• Ability to solve problems and make effective decisions in matters requiring immediate response
• Ability to work independently with minimal oversight or supervision, resolving concerns when possible before bringing to supervisor
• Adaptable to performing under moderate levels of stress, imposed by frequent deadlines, peak workloads, or public/student/faculty contact
• Demonstrated ability to work in and foster an environment of respect, professionalism and civility with a population of faculty, staff, and students from all backgrounds and experiences, or a commitment to do so as a staff member at VCU.

Preferred Qualifications:

• Pharm.D., Ph.D., Ed.D., or other terminal degree in a related field

• Experience working in higher education and/or experiential education settings

• Working knowledge of CORE, Banner, Canvas and Google Workspace
