Department Summary:

The Division of Infectious Diseases at Virginia Commonwealth University (VCU) School of Medicine invites applications for a full-time faculty position at the Assistant or Associate Professor level, with a specific focus in Transplant and Oncology Infectious Diseases (TID).

Founded in 1838 as the medical department of Hampden-Sydney College in Richmond, the VCU School of Medicine is the oldest continuously operating medical school in the South.  VCU Medical Center is a top-tier referral center with over 850 beds, a Level 1 Trauma Center, a critical care hospital with over 200 private beds including a newly dedicated Transplant ICU and Comprehensive Liver Care Unit in 2025, and an NCI-designated Comprehensive Cancer Center – one of two in the state.  In 2025, VCU Health Hume-Lee Transplant Center performed the world’s first robotic living liver donor surgery as well as our first lung transplant, with an overall total of 569 total organs transplanted that year.

Duties & Responsibilities:

This is a Clinician-Educator position with ample opportunity to grow or develop areas of academic focus aligned with transplant infectious diseases, including multidisciplinary clinical programs, quality improvement initiatives, and clinical research.

The successful applicant will:

  • Serve as a dedicated TID specialist, with focused inpatient consultation services and outpatient follow-up clinics targeting infections in immunocompromised hosts.
  • Support high-acuity medical and surgical patients across VCU Health
  • Contribute to the education and mentoring of medical students, residents, and fellows
  • Demonstrate a commitment to scholarship, clinical quality improvement, and collaborative care delivery
  • Work effectively in and foster a diverse and inclusive environment as part of VCU’s mission
  • Participate in multi-disciplinary and collaborative efforts to support the Hume-Lee transplant and Massey Cancer Center, including listing meetings, thorough reviews, and quality initiatives
  • Provide care through inpatient consultation as well as ambulatory care clinics

Qualifications:

Minimum Qualifications

  • Board Eligible/Board Certified in Infectious Diseases
  • Must meet criteria for appointment as an Assistant or Associate Professor
  • Must be eligible for medical licensure in the Commonwealth of Virginia
  • Demonstrated expertise in the prevention, evaluation and management of infection in immunocompromised persons including solid organ transplant recipients, oncology patients, and hematopoietic stem cell transplant recipients 
  • Demonstrated ability to work in and foster an environment of respect, professionalism and civility with a population of faculty, staff, and students from all backgrounds and experiences, or a commitment to do so as a faculty member at VCU

Salary Range: Commensurate
