Duties & Responsibilities:

The Simulation Technology Specialist / IT Analyst provides critical technical support for the simulation center by operating, maintaining, and troubleshooting advanced simulation technologies and audiovisual systems. This hands-on position ensures the seamless delivery of simulation-based learning experiences through daily equipment operation, proactive problem-solving, and collaboration with vendors and IT staff. The ideal candidate will demonstrate strong technical aptitude, meticulous attention to detail, and an ability to work effectively both independently and as part of a team in a dynamic educational environment.

Key Responsibilities

Simulation Technology Operations & Support

  • Operate, program, and configure high-fidelity manikins and simulator equipment for various training scenarios
  • Set up and break down simulation events, including arranging specialized equipment, tools, instruments, furniture, and monitoring systems according to event specifications
  • Test simulation scenarios and equipment to ensure proper functionality before scheduled events
  • Assist in the identification, tagging, and processing of surplus simulation equipment and technology assets in accordance with VCU surplus property policies and procedures

Documentation & Inventory Management

  • Perform regular inventory counts and maintain accurate records of simulation equipment, technology assets, and supplies
  • Update and create technical documentation for center operations, equipment procedures, and troubleshooting guides
  • Assist with implementing standardized room configurations and setup protocols
  • Manage inventory of disposable supplies and capital equipment by monitoring stock levels and proactively identifying items that need replenishment or purchase
  • Support periodic physical inventory audits to reconcile equipment records with actual assets on hand, identifying discrepancies and initiating corrective documentation

Technical Maintenance & Troubleshooting

  • Conduct routine maintenance on computers, servers, simulators, and simulation-related technology
  • Troubleshoot network connectivity issues including wired and wireless connections affecting simulation room operations
  • Perform basic hardware diagnostics and repairs on desktop computers, laptops, monitors, and peripheral devices used throughout the simulation center
  • Assist in the setup, testing, and maintenance of control room technology including simulation management software platforms
  • Support installation, configuration, and updating of simulation software, operating systems, and applications across center workstations
  • Report technical problems and system malfunctions to appropriate personnel with clear documentation of the issue, steps taken, and recommended next action
  • Evaluate condition of aging or non-functional equipment to determine repair viability versus surplus disposition, making recommendations to the Supervisor
  • Maintain detailed maintenance logs for each manikin documenting issues identified, corrective actions taken, and current operational status
  • Clean, inspect, and restock manikin consumables including airway components, skin replacements, and internal fluid systems according to manufacturer specifications

Coordination & Communication

  • Participate in weekly schedule meetings and additional project meetings and contribute ideas to advance center objectives
  • Serve as a point of contact for the Learning Management System vendor for routine communication and support requests
  • Coordinate with IT departments and external vendors to facilitate equipment servicing, repairs, and technical projects
  • Communicate technical issues and status updates to the simulation center staff
  • Collaborate with Simulation Center Operations staff on room and equipment allocation for current and future scheduled events, to identify constraints and optimize resources and center utilization

Professional Development

  • Maintain proficiency in current simulation technologies and learn new tools and platforms as implemented
  • Participate in technical training to enhance skills and stay current with center technology

Qualifications:

Minimum Qualifications

  • Associate’s degree in Information Technology, Computer Science, or a related technical field; or a high school diploma/GED with a minimum of 2 years of relevant technical experience
  • Minimum 1-2 years of experience in technical support, IT operations, or related field
  • Proficiency with Windows 11 operating systems and general computing environments
  • Working knowledge of computer systems, basic networking, and troubleshooting techniques
  • Ability to maintain strict confidentiality regarding sensitive assignments and organizational matters
  • Strong attention to detail with the ability to maintain accurate records and documentation
  • Strong problem-solving skills and the ability to follow technical procedures accurately
  • Excellent communication skills for effective interaction with staff, vendors, and IT personnel
  • Physical ability to regularly lift and move equipment weighing 50 pounds or more
  • Self-motivated and curious, capable of working independently and collaborating effectively as a team member
  • Flexibility to work occasional evenings or weekends as required by simulation event schedules
  • Demonstrated ability to work in and foster an environment of respect, professionalism and civility with a population of faculty, staff, and students from all backgrounds and experiences, or a commitment to do so as a staff member at VCU..

Preferred Qualifications

  • Associate's or Bachelor's degree in Information Technology, Information Systems, or related field
  • Familiarity with simulation platforms such as Gaumard, Laerdal, and METI/CAE Healthcare simulators
  • Experience working with Learning Management Systems (LMS)
  • CompTIA A+ or similar entry-level IT certification
  • Basic understanding of server systems and virtualization concepts
  • Proficient in using audio/video equipment and software for capturing, converting, editing, and transferring multimedia content
  • Background or coursework in healthcare, medical education, or clinical sciences is preferred
  • Experience with inventory management systems or asset tracking software
  • Customer service experience in a technical support role
  • Previous experience in university, academic medical center, or hospital settings

Salary Range: $47,000-$52,000
