Department: SOMTech - Simulation Technology

The Center for Human Simulation and Patient Safety (Sim Center) at the VCU School of Medicine is seeking a highly motivated and detail-oriented Simulation Technology Assistant to support the daily operations of our state-of-the-art medical simulation facility. This hourly position provides technical, operational, and administrative support for simulation-based education programs serving medical students, residents, nurses, and other healthcare professionals.

The Simulation Center features realistic clinical environments, including examination rooms, an operating room, an intensive care unit, classrooms, and conference spaces, as well as advanced patient simulators and standardized patient programs. The Simulation Technology Assistant will help ensure the seamless delivery of educational activities that allow learners to practice clinical, procedural, communication, and patient-safety skills in a controlled environment before working with actual patients.

This position is ideal for a student or recent graduate with interests in information systems, healthcare technology, simulation operations, project management, data management, and educational technology.

Duties & Responsibilities:

Simulation Operations Support

  • Assist with the setup, operation, and breakdown of simulation sessions, including patient simulators, audiovisual equipment, computers, and classroom technology.
  • Prepare clinical training spaces, including exam rooms, operating room environments, ICU settings, and procedural training stations.
  • Operate, program, and configure high-fidelity manikins and simulator equipment for diverse training scenarios
  • Assist with inventory management, organization, and maintenance of simulation equipment and supplies.
  • Conduct routine equipment inspections and report maintenance needs to simulation leadership.

Technical and Information Systems Support

  • Maintain accurate records of simulation activities, equipment usage, and inventory within designated databases and tracking systems.
  • Assist with data collection, reporting, and analysis related to simulation programs and educational outcomes.
  • Support troubleshooting of computer systems, network-connected devices, simulation software, and audiovisual technologies.
  • Utilize Microsoft Excel, Google Sheets, and database systems to organize and manage operational information.
  • Assist with process documentation, workflow mapping, and operational improvement initiatives.

Standardized Patient and Educational Program Support

  • Coordinate room preparation and scheduling logistics for standardized patient encounters.
  • Support actors, faculty, and learners participating in simulation activities.
  • Ensure simulation scenarios are executed according to established protocols and educational objectives.
  • Maintain confidentiality and professionalism while supporting learner assessments and educational exercises.

Administrative and Project Support

  • Assist simulation leadership with special projects, program development initiatives, and operational planning.
  • Prepare reports, presentations, and documentation using Microsoft Office applications.
  • Support project management activities including scheduling, tracking deliverables, and coordinating resources.
  • Participate in continuous quality improvement efforts focused on learner experience, patient safety, and operational efficiency.

Qualifications:

Minimum Qualifications

  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Strong organizational skills and attention to detail.
  • Experience using Microsoft Excel, Google Sheets, or similar data management tools.
  • Ability to learn and operate technical equipment and software systems.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills.
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a team environment.
  • Ability to lift and transport equipment and supplies as needed.
  • Demonstrated ability to work in and foster an environment of respect, professionalism and civility with a population of faculty, staff, and students from various backgrounds and experiences, or a commitment to do so as a staff member at VCU.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Current enrollment in or completion of a degree program in Computer Information Systems, Information Technology, Business Analytics, Healthcare Administration, Engineering, or a related field.
  • Experience with databases, SQL, data management, or reporting systems.
  • Experience supporting laboratory, technical, theater, audiovisual, or simulation environments.
  • Knowledge of networking fundamentals, cybersecurity principles, or information systems.

Salary Range: $20-$25/hour
