The Massey Comprehensive Cancer Center welcomes applications for several tenure-eligible faculty positions. We are seeking faculty members who are conducting impactful studies with research interests in the cancer field. Preference will be given to those focusing on translational oncology, immuno-oncology & drug discovery including medicinal chemistry and structural biology. The faculty will also support the department with teaching responsibilities at the graduate level and mentoring students and/or trainees as appropriate.

VCU Massey Comprehensive Cancer Center is one of only 69 National Cancer Institute-designated institutions in the country that leads and shapes America’s cancer research efforts. Working with all cancer types, Massey conducts basic science, translational, clinical and prevention and control cancer research, provides state-of-the-art treatments, and promotes cancer education and training. Since 1974, Massey has served as an internationally recognized center of excellence. It offers one of the largest selections of cancer clinical trials in Virginia and serves patients at multiple sites throughout the state.
 
The mission of the Massey Comprehensive Cancer Center is to reduce the state cancer burden for all Virginians by addressing the confluence between biological, social, and policy drivers through high-impact, cutting-edge research; person-centered care across the continuum, from prevention through survivorship; community integration; and training the next generation of community-centric researchers and healthcare professionals.

Duties & Responsibilities:

Teaching
The faculty member shares a deep commitment to effective instruction, creation of innovative courses and mentoring of students in research, outreach and professional development. They demonstrate leadership in developing techniques designed to meet the needs of differing learning styles and intellectual interests, especially in the context of interdisciplinary research interests that complement the program. The faculty member will contribute to the teaching mission and will be engaged in training of students and faculty and will deliver lectures, contribute to course development and implementation in the identified department. In addition, the faculty member will mentor capstone projects of master-level students and supervise dissertation research.
 
Research
Contribute to VCU’s national reputation through research and scholarship (extramural funding, high quality publications, citations, and national recognition through honorific awards and committee leadership) and maintain active involvement in appropriate national or international organizations and bodies. Publish in peer-reviewed journals and submit grant applications for extramural funding in the field of translational oncology, immuno-oncology, and/or drug discovery including medicinal chemistry and structural biology. It is expected that the faculty member will establish and maintain a vigorous, extramurally funded research laboratory.
 
The faculty member is expected to direct the research lab and comply with all regulatory requirements. They supervise laboratory personnel, write and submit multiple grant applications during the course of the academic year; write and publish multiple manuscripts during the course of an academic year. They serve as a PI on peer-reviewed grants and are responsible for complying with all institution and sponsors terms and conditions for grant funding.
The member will participate in Massey Comprehensive Cancer Center Core Grant application preparation as needed, this includes providing updates on active research, grants and publications. They participate and engage with other members of the Massey Cancer Center in cancer center activities and in collaborative research projects.
 
Service
Faculty members will serve on Departmental, College, and/or University committees as necessary, as well as in a professional capacity in their field (e.g., reviewer, conference organizer, etc.)

Qualifications:

Minimum Qualifications

  • PhD, MD, or MD/PhD degree basic, translational, or clinical sciences
  • Extensive cancer relevant research experience
  • Proven extramural funding track record
  • Extensive publication experience
  • Proven trainee and faculty mentorship skills
  • Track record working in multi-disciplinary fields
  • Experience in, and coordination of, collaborative grants and managing trans-disciplinary research
  • Demonstrated ability to work in and foster an environment of respect, professionalism, and civility with a population of faculty, staff, and students from all backgrounds and experiences, or a commitment to do so as a faculty member at VCU

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience working in a matrix environment within academic medicine
  • Proven success in collaborating with multi-disciplinary teams

 

Salary Range: Commensurate
