Mission and Goal of Unit: Provide rehabilitation leadership to the Commonwealth of Virginia to improve the quality of life for individuals with disabilities by maximizing independence in living skills, recreation, and employment activities through innovative education, evidence-based research, and outcome-focused patient care. Serve the needs of persons with disabilities through various grant and contract projects related to traumatic brain injury, spinal cord injury, employment and work supports, disability benefits, and enrichment of quality of life.

Chief Purpose of this Position: The chief purpose of this position is to provide and advance the patient care, research, and teaching missions through direct pediatric patient care in the clinic and the training of residents, medical students, and other trainees.  Provides pediatric outpatient and inpatient consult rehabilitation services.

Duties & Responsibilities:

Clinical: 

  • Primary clinical responsibility is pediatric rehabilitation, including electrodiagnosis and interventional care as appropriate
  • Support established multi-specialty clinics in muscular dystrophy, spinal bifida, spasticity, cerebral palsy and concussion/TBI
  • Responsible for the proper management and quality of service in the provision of care
  • Provide consults upon referral from medical facilities with formal, coordinated relationships with the department
  • Prepare periodic reports pertaining to the care of patients to the Division Chair
  • Ensure that medical  services are documented and signed in accordance with VCUHS and payer policies and guidelines
  • Assist in the establishment of referral sources for the CHoR Pavilion and VCU Medical Center
  • Assist the billing professionals in the preparation of appropriate charges for the medical services rendered and in the review of non-reimbursed billings

Teaching:

  • Assist in the supervision of residents, fellows, and other learners in the environment
  • Participate in the orientation of each group of house staff and students to the Rehabilitation program
  • Assist in establishing the core curriculum including a list of reading material for house staff and students
  • Assist in the evaluation of house staff and students assigned to the facilities after each rotation

Research:  Though not a primary function of the job, participate as needed/interested in research activities as well as supporting ongoing and new projects as appropriate in the context of clinical care

Service:

  • Participate in university and department committees as requested
  • Contribute to the field of Physiatry overall through professional organizations

Other:

  • Represent the department in official meetings as requested
  • Attend scheduled grand rounds, staff conferences, and lectures upon occasion as requested
  • Maintain practice credentials and completion of education as required by hospital, university, and state practice organization

Qualifications:

Minimum Qualifications

  • Medical Degree (MD or DO)
  • Must have good academic and clinical credentials, demonstrated ability to establish new clinical initiatives, effective oral and written communication and leadership skills. Ability to work well with people in a team environment is essential
  • Demonstrated ability to work in and foster an environment of respect, professionalism and civility with a population of faculty, staff, and students from all backgrounds and experiences, or a commitment to do so as a faculty member at VCU

  • Board Eligible or Board Certified in Pediatric Rehabilitation

Salary Range: Commensurate
