Department: Mary and Frances Youth Center

Position Summary & Role Overview:  The Division of Community Engagement is seeking a positive, outgoing, and creative hourly or student worker to support our communication and digital content needs. This role is ideal for someone who enjoys working with and around people and community members and has a passion for digital storytelling. The Communications and Digital Content Assistant will assist in capturing and sharing the impact of VCU’s community engagement efforts through photography, videography, video editing, graphic design, and social media content creation.

This position requires the ability to work both in-office and on-site at our community-based locations, including the VCU Health Hub at 25th and, primarily, the Mary and Frances Youth Center.

Typical Duties & Responsibilities:

  • Photography & Videography: Capture compelling photos and videos of community engagement activities, events, and programs.

  • Video Editing: Edit short-form videos using Adobe Premiere for social media, newsletters, and promotional use.

  • Graphic Design: Design marketing materials using Canva templates to maintain brand consistency.

  • Social Media Management: Assist in creating and scheduling content for social media platforms, ensuring engaging and relevant posts.

  • Content Creation: Assist in developing engaging digital content for social media, newsletters, and web platforms.

  • On-Site Engagement: Interact professionally with community members, students, and staff while documenting events.

  • Administrative Support: Assist with organizing digital assets, updating content, and other communications tasks.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Exceptional interpersonal, verbal, and written communication skills, including writing, editing, and proofreading 

  • Self-motivated, strategic, creative, entrepreneurial, and energetic 

  • Flexibility and willingness to perform a wide range of tasks as necessary

  • Problem-solving skills using sound judgment and professional discretion 

  • Strong work ethic and time management skills 

  • Demonstrated ability to work in and foster an environment of respect, professionalism and civility with a population of faculty, staff, and students from all backgrounds and experiences, or a commitment to do so as a staff member at VCU

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Knowledge of VCU policies and procedures related to communication 

  • Previous experience working with activities related to community engagement and community-based activities 

  • Comfortable and confident working with community members in various settings.

  • Willing and comfortable capturing photographs and videos of people and community members in an engaging and respectful way.

  • Experience in photography, videography, and video editing using Adobe Creative Suite..

  • Strong design skills with familiarity in Canva.

  • Experience managing social media content (Instagram, Facebook, Linkedin, etc.).

  • Strong time management and organizational skills to balance multiple projects.

  • Ability to work both independently and collaboratively.

  • Reliable, detail-oriented, and creative with strong communication skills.

Salary Range: Up to $20 hourly
