Facility Maintenance Technician
The Facility Maintenance Technician is primarily responsible for aquatic facility maintenance at the Cary Street Gym, and will assist with general maintenance of the Cary Street Gym, Cary Street Field, Outing Center, and the MCV Recreation Center, including light carpentry, electrical, and plumbing work. This position reports to the Facility Maintenance Coordinator.
SPECIFIC RESPONSIBILITIES INCLUDE:
Aquatic Systems Maintenance:
Perform regular and preventative maintenance and repair work on all aquatic mechanical systems.
Ensure water chemistry levels stay within established guidelines to provide a safe environment for both patrons and the facilities.
Plan, coordinate, and oversee work to be performed by outside vendors.
Establish schedules to minimize disruptions and coordinate repair work with the Aquatics Coordinator, when possible.
Facility Maintenance:
Assist with routine electrical, plumbing and carpentry work, ensuring Recreational and Well-Being facilities meet department standards in a cost effective manner.
Maintain, repair, and replace auxiliary facility equipment, including hair dryers, ice machines, clocks, scales, and lockers.
Assist the Facility Maintenance Coordinator and Assistant Director for Facility Maintenance with maintenance and renovation projects as needed.
Assist the Facility Maintenance Coordinator with work to be performed by outside vendors.
Inventory Management:
Identifies needs for supplies, materials, tools, equipment and repair parts.
Maintains appropriate inventory to ensure timely repairs.
Maintains all tools, equipment, and work areas in a safe and orderly manner.
Risk Management:
Assist in providing an effective safety/risk management plan for facility maintenance that includes regular safety reviews, chemical handling procedures, emergency procedure development, and appropriate documentation.
Assist in conducting regular safety inspections of all facilities and equipment, maintaining appropriate documentation for risk management and supervisors review.
Obtain appropriate training to ensure proper handling of chemicals, power tools, and maintenance for facility systems.
Fiscal/Statistical/Database/Equipment Management:
Assist with the development and management of annual facility maintenance budgets.
Maintain maintenance requests, work logs (preventative, regular, and emergency repair work), equipment specifications, and warranty information.
General Administration:
Attend and actively participate in staff meetings, in-service education sessions and other divisional or departmental meetings.
Participate in other Division of Student Affairs initiatives, programs, and committees as required. Collaborate with other university departments in support of the university’s academic mission.
Assist in the overall operation of the department by providing input and completing assigned projects, annual goals and objectives and annual reports.
Maintain professional skill sets and certifications as appropriate for job responsibilities and as a professional.
Serve as part of the onsite management team, providing assistance to the facility operations team as needed.
Perform other duties as assigned by the Assistant Director of Facilities Management or Facilities Maintenance Coordinator.
POSITION: This position is a full-time twelve-month non-exempt position.
SALARY: $41,000-$44,000
Qualifications:
Minimum Qualifications
Required:
High School graduate or equivalent.
Valid Virginia driver’s license with ability to obtain VCU driving privileges (no major infractions or less than 2 minor violations within the last 3 years)
Knowledge of aquatic mechanical systems and water chemistry
Certified Pool Operator credential, or ability to obtain one
Ability to take initiative, problem solve, and meet deadlines
Excellent written and oral communication skills, interpersonal skills and ability to work collaboratively
Experience and skills in operating computers.
Ability to lift and handle deliveries and materials as needed.
Ability to respond to requests with a professional and positive demeanor; the desire to create a positive and enthusiastic environment within DSA
Demonstrated ability to work in and foster an environment of respect, professionalism and civility with a population of faculty, staff, and students from all backgrounds and experiences, or a commitment to do so as a staff member at VCU.
Other requirements:
Position involves working occasional evenings and weekends.
Position is located in a non-smoking work area.
Preferred Qualifications
Preferred:
Experience installing, maintaining, diagnosing, and repairing mechanical equipment.
Ability to perform routine carpentry, electrical, and plumbing repairs.
Knowledge of preventative maintenance, regular maintenance, and repair services necessary to maintain safe and proper operation of recreational facilities.
Experience working in a university/college recreational sports setting.
