Department: Facilities Operations Admin

Duties & Responsibilities:

VCU’s Facilities Management Department is seeking to hire an Electrician for Facilities Operations.

The Electrician utilizes knowledge of the Electrical trade to perform preventive maintenance, repair, and installation of building infrastructure ensuring efficient operation of Residential Life and Housing facilities; provides exemplary customer service to all faculty, staff, and students supporting the University’s mission of teaching, high-impact research, and creative expression; identifies and documents system deficiencies using diagnostic tools and advises management of tasks requiring priority attention; and provides quality workmanship and service to maximize system availability and minimize unscheduled downtime.

Responsibilities include (but are not limited to):

Reactive/Service Work

  • Independently respond to service requests requiring diagnosis and repair of various building infrastructure, such as fire alarm systems, electrical distribution systems, lighting systems, motors, motor starters, low voltage controls, electrical portion of mechanical equipment, variable frequency drives and other electrical equipment/systems utilizing specialized knowledge of electrical theory and practice
  • Independently respond to service requests requiring diagnosis and repair of appliances, carpentry, plumbing, and mechanical systems.

Preventive Maintenance

  • Independently perform and complete regularly scheduled preventive maintenance to various building infrastructure, such as fire alarm control panels, electrical distribution systems, motors, generators, lighting systems, variable frequency drives and other electrical equipment/systems

Customer Service/Teamwork

  • Works in a collaborative and collegial manner throughout the department, division and University
  • Interact with others to collectively resolve problems, accomplish mutual goals, and foster an atmosphere of trust
  • Share information and ideas to improve customer service and promote Facilities Management’s goals
  • Listens to and anticipates customer needs; provides clear explanations; responds quickly; takes initiative to assist internal and external customers
  • Communicates respectfully to internal and external customers; appreciates diversity and respects differences

Communication and Monitoring Work of Others

  • Advise supervision and or management by recommending equipment maintenance tasks and identifying equipment needing priority attention
  • Communicate orally and in writing regarding work schedules, system problems, estimated completion times and effects of system problems on occupant safety and comfort
  • Work with lesser skilled team members in the various techniques of the trades to increase their skill level and ability to work independently
  • Use trade knowledge to monitor work of contractors to assure compliance with specifications, codes and drawings

Designated/Other Duties

  • Other duties as assigned
  • Work/on-call during inclement weather and emergencies
  • Assume on-call responsibility on a rotating basis
  • Substitutes for the Superintendent, including time card approval and work site management

Computer Skills/AiM

  • Utilize computer skills to access email and research parts/information as required
  • Demonstrate working knowledge of AiM and AiM GO ensuring prompt completion of work requests and time card entry following all established work flow processes, including notes logs for all work requests over 30 days

Organize Mechanical Areas

  • Clean and organize materials in the Shop and mechanical areas
  • Participates in periodic cleaning of shop

Qualifications:

Minimum Qualifications

  • Several years' experience in commercial/institutional electrical or mechanical maintenance
  • State of Virginia Journeyman Electrical License required or the ability to obtain within the first year of employment
  • State of Virginia Driver's License
  • High School diploma, GED, or equivalent required
  • Ability to diagnose, repair, service, and install a wide variety of electrical systems
  • Ability to communicate orally and in writing to supervision, other employees, and customers
  • Knowledge of appropriate building codes
  • Ability to read/interpret drawings, plans, specifications, and scopes
  • Ability to use a wide variety of hand tools and power equipment
  • Demonstrated ability to work in and foster an environment of respect, professionalism and civility with a population of faculty, staff, and students from all backgrounds and experiences, or a commitment to do so as a staff member at VCU

Preferred Qualifications

  • 5+ years' experience in commercial/institutional mechanical and electrical maintenance preferred

Salary Range: $65,000 - $69,000 ($31.25/hr - $33.17/hr) + up to $2,500 Sign-on Bonus
