Position Summary:

The Director of Recruitment Admissions, in collaboration with the Assistant Vice President for Strategic Enrollment and Admissions leaders, develops, leads and implements recruitment strategies that support the university’s enrollment goals for new, undergraduate students.

 

The Director of Recruitment is responsible for the supervision and oversight of multiple recruitment and admissions initiatives, processes and teams, including travel coordinators, assistant, associate, and senior associate directors of undergraduate admissions local and regional recruiters; event management staff; and the Welcome Center staff.

 

The Director of Recruitment will also provide oversight of these areas to ensure the effective recruitment for high school students and their families, community college students, online and returning students. They will also render admissions decisions, review admissions and scholarship appeal and policies, and work to establish and maintain interdepartmental collaboration.

 

In collaboration with the Assistant Vice President for Strategic Enrollment and Admissions, the Director of Admissions Communications, and the Executive Director for Admissions Operations, the Director of Recruitment will provide leadership in the development and implementation of enrollment goals, objectives and policies in the Office of Admissions.

 

Core Responsibilities: 

  • Oversees and manages the undergraduate application review process in order to form each year’s new freshman and transfer classes based on university enrollment goals. Oversees the evaluation of undergraduate (freshman and transfer) applicant credentials to determine their admissibility to the university. 
  • Leads, plans, implements, and evaluates strategies for recruitment and admissions to meet university undergraduate enrollment goals. 
  • Maintain deep knowledge of enrollment data trends in order to evaluate the impact on university enrollment.
  • Leads campus colleagues to collaborate on university-wide domestic undergraduate recruitment efforts. Serves in a leadership role among the undergraduate recruiters in the College and Schools, including convening meetings to discuss recruitment goals and best practices.
  • Oversees the management of the undergraduate recruitment staff and welcome center staff members, providing leadership and support while ensuring that university and office policies and procedures are followed.
  • Reviews, analyzes and evaluates data and develops strategic plans for recruitment markets and territory assignments.
  • Strategically and effectively utilizes the latest recruitment data and software, to reach goals and offer effective outreach and train and support staff in incorporating their use into daily work. 
  • Leads the university committee that reviews 1) undergraduate applicants with discipline issues and 2) admitted students who have not yet enrolled with felonies, consulting with the Threat Assessment Team, legal counsel, and the Assistant Vice President for Strategic Enrollment and Admissions as needed.
  • Represents the university to both internal and external constituencies and works to develop strong, effective relationships with students, parents, high school counselors and college representatives.
  • Represents the university while attending recruitment events such as, but not limited to, panel discussions, college fairs and special receptions. 
  • Oversees the management of the office’s recruitment database to ensure that travel related information is accurately recorded.
  • Ensures that staff have access to appropriate professional development opportunities, keeping in mind resource limitations. 
  • Define and track appropriate metrics to evaluate ROI and outcomes. Revise strategies and tactics as needed. 
  • Works with Strategic Enrollment Management and Student Success colleagues formally and informally to achieve division goals. Maintains first-class public relations and provides quality customer service in person, via electronic media and over the telephone to all university constituencies. 
  • Provide reports on recruitment initiatives and outcomes. 
  • Monitors and administers an annual budget(s). Analyzes budget data and provides strategic recommendations to optimize resource allocation and cost efficiency.

Other Position Details: 

  • This position is a hybrid position up to 40% remote. On campus work is required.
  • Occasional local travel is required.

Qualifications:

Minimum Qualifications

  • Master’s degree in Higher Education, Administration or related field from an accredited institution or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Significant management/supervisory experience in student services required. 
  • Experience in higher education. 
  • Experience in admissions or related enrollment management fields. 
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills, interpersonal skills and public relations skills required. 
  • Demonstrated experience working in and fostering an environment of respect, professionalism and civility with a population of faculty, staff, and students from all backgrounds and experiences, or a commitment to do so as a staff member at VCU.
  • Demonstrated ability to work in and foster an environment of respect, professionalism and civility with a population of faculty, staff, and students from all backgrounds and experiences, or a commitment to do so as a staff member at VCU.

Preferred Qualifications

  • 5 or more years of management/supervisory experience in student services. 
  • Experience leading student recruitment strategies and enrollment growth. 
  • Knowledge of college recruitment practices, admissions policies, and student engagement strategies. 
  • Strong leadership and relationship-building skills, with experience supervising admissions staff and collaborating with schools, community organizations, and campus stakeholders to enhance recruitment outreach and student engagement. 

Salary Range: Up to $125,000
