VCUarts Qatar’s Graphic Design department is a community of makers, researchers, and strategists dedicated to using design thinking to communicate ideas and impact the world. We are seeking dynamic Adjunct Faculty members to teach undergraduate courses within our BFA program.

As an Adjunct Instructor, you will guide students through a curriculum that prioritizes making as a primary mode of investigation and research as a critical lens for understanding context. You will have the opportunity to teach across various levels, from sophomore visual principles to senior-level synthesis projects.

Key Responsibilities

  • Deliver studio-based or lecture-based courses such as Core Studio, Design Practices, or specialized electives (e.g., Typographic Systems, Web Design, or Book Arts).
  • Support students in developing visual and verbal representation skills and foster a non-hierarchical learning environment.
  • Ensure course outcomes align with the department’s focus on cultural literacy, specifically addressing design within a multicultural and contemporary Arabic context.
  • Participate in the "Dialogues" series and collaborate with other faculty to bridge the gap between traditional craft and emerging technologies.

Required Qualifications & Skills

  • Terminal degree in graphic design or a related field (e.g., MFA) or a BFA combined with significant professional training and/or experience equivalent to a terminal degree.
  • Appropriate teaching experience or strong oral presentation and communication skills.
  • Mastery of industry-standard tools including Adobe Creative Suite (Photoshop, Illustrator, InDesign).
  • Strong portfolio demonstrating high-level skills in typography, color theory, layout, and visual communication.
  • Demonstrated experience working in and fostering an environment of respect, professionalism and civility with a population of faculty, staff, and students from all backgrounds and experiences, or a commitment to do so as a faculty member at VCU.
  • Proficiency in spoken and written English (the primary language of instruction). Arabic language skills are highly encouraged given our regional context.
  • Eligibility to work in Qatar or meet specific immigration/employment requirements under Qatari law.

Preferred Skills

  • Experience with Bilingual (Arabic/English) Typography or Type Design.
  • Expertise in Emerging Media, such as motion graphics, UI/UX, or interactive design.
  • Prior experience in higher education or community-based teaching.

How to Apply

Application Materials should include the following:

  1. A current CV.
  2. A Letter of Interest detailing your teaching philosophy and professional practice.
  3. A Portfolio of professional work and, if available, examples of student work. If file size is problematic, include an accessible link that points to a website or cloud storage (with access instructions) to view all visual work.
