The Stravitz-Sanyal Liver Institute of Virginia Commonwealth University is seeking a PRN MRI Technologist to join its world-renowned team of Hepatologists, researchers and imaging experts in changing the landscape of liver and metabolic diseases through research. The candidate will have the ability to engage in translational molecular research imaging at our new facility to include a state-of-the art research MRI scanner and equipment. The successful candidate will have experience in general MRI imaging, imaging protocols, MRI safety, and contrast administration. The PRN MRI Technologist will capture and process human research clinical images for the Imaging Center while working within a specialized team utilizing specific hardware and software to deliver high-quality imaging data. They will report to the Manager of Research Imaging with regulatory oversight from the MRI Director. Anticipated start date for June 2026.

Position Duties and Responsibilities: 

•  Complete pre-scan quality control measures on equipment, and perform safety screenings/evaluations of all MRI participants for contraindicated devices and metallic foreign body injuries prior to scanning

• Consults with MRI Director and or Principal Investigator on participant devices and contraindications as needed

•  Perform quality control of MRI images and related documentation in a technical and research-intensive environment

•  Safely administer imaging agents to participants, monitoring for and following all reaction protocols per ACR guidelines

• Execute imaging scans according to research protocols and manage incidental findings in coordination with the MRI Director and Principal Investigators

•  Address research participant’ concerns, ensuring participant safety and comfort during scans

•  Ensure that the MRI rooms are kept clean, organized, and safe at all times

•  Communicate with scanner manufacturer on troubleshooting as needed

•  Assist in MR Sequencing, imaging data management, and segmentation of images from MR investigations, including documentation and reporting of results

•  Obtain participant vascular access and participate in other operational tasks within the MRI suite as needed 

•  Work with MRI Director to ensure regulatory and accreditation compliance, including maintaining appropriate training, licensure and certification

•  Coordinate with staff and departmental leadership to streamline research workflow and operational efficiency.

• Perform quality assurance procedures and implement process improvement changes as required

Required Qualifications: 

•  Associate's degree in radiologic technology or related field from an accredited program recognized by the American Registry of Radiology Technologist (ARRT)

•  Current MRI Certification by American Registry of Radiology Technologist (ARRT)

•  Must be able to work around an MRI machine

•  Current CPR certification

•  Must possess, utilize, and maintain knowledge of magnetic and radiation protection, safety, and current complex scanning protocols

•  Thorough understanding of and ability to practice principles of magnetic resonance safety to minimize risk to research participants, self, and others

•  Considerable knowledge of MRI policy and procedures, as well as the ability to interpret and apply information to daily work

•  Ability to think critically and use independent, professional, and ethical judgment in all aspects of work

•  Proven ability to work independently and to manage several competing assignments simultaneously 

  • Demonstrated experience working in and fostering an environment of respect, professionalism and civility with a population of faculty, staff, and students from various backgrounds and experiences, or a commitment to do so as a staff member at VCU

Preferred Qualifications:

•  NMTCB or ARRT(N) certification is a plus

•  Training in PET/CT modalities preferred but not required. Must be willing to cross train in PET/CT if needed

•  Experience with research program development and implementation preferred but not required
